Thick Nails (onychomycosis)
Thick toenails are simply when one or more nails have become thickened, this can lead to them being difficult to cut, uncomfortable and sometimes considered unsightly. If a nail is particularly thick and goes left untreated, the excess pressure from footwear onto the nail may lead to tissue breakdown to the nail bed which lies underneath the nail plate.
Causes of thick nails
Fungal nail infection
Trauma
Sporting activities
Medical conditions
Reduced circulation
Unsuitable footwear

Treatment for thick nails
Following an assessment, thick nails can be treated with a range of treatments depending on the particular cause and what outcome the patient wishes to receive.
If the nail matrix (root) is damaged, the damage is permanent and the nail does not return to its former structure. Nail reconstruction is a particularly good option in this case.
